Fostering collaboration between HR and finance

As a global partner to the construction industry, Hilti provides the solutions that build the world around us. With its global footprint, the company is committed to being the best partner for its customers for productivity, safety, and sustainability.

To drive its own internal transformation and manage its ambitious growth goals, Hilti turned to Workday to create a single global system for its people processes that enabled a new and more transparent approach to HR management.

Laying the digital foundation for growth.

Before Workday, Hilti didn’t have a central HR system. When it embarked on a new growth strategy, a more unified and digital HR approach was essential to meet this ambitious goal.

Recruitment is only one side of the scale. We would need to hire even more people if we wouldn’t retain the right people. So onboarding them, retaining them, making sure they have a great employee experience at Hilti and investing into their development is really, really important for us.

The introduction of Workday was also coupled with a new people-centric approach at Hilti, designed around “ownership from an employee perspective and to foster frequent, meaningful development conversations with their managers,” as Stefanie Groth, global head of HR Transformation and Digitalization, explains.

Building efficiency from a single source of truth.

“Workday has really helped us to enable these processes and created transparency around employee data,” Groth adds, making it the backbone for managing the entire employee lifecycle, from onboarding to development and retention.

The impact of moving to a unified platform was immediate and profound, as it allows for a seamless end-to-end experience where goals are set and conversations on performance and development are documented, providing clarity for employees and managers alike.

What we really like is that we have everything in one system, for our employees, managers and also, of course, for our HR teams. Everything sits in one place.

Extending the possibilities for a custom fit.

When Hilti sought to digitize its document management, no existing solution quite met its needs. Rather than compromise, the company chose to innovate.

“We looked into Workday Extend to really augment the possibilities within Workday,” notes Groth. In a design partnership with Workday partner Kainos, Hilti cocreated a document management solution that was a perfect fit for its requirements.

This custom application is now rolled out globally and “has fundamentally changed the way we work,” says Groth.

Planning for future success.

Looking ahead, Hilti started leveraging Workday for strategic workforce planning, which is a crucial area for the organization given its ambitious growth trajectory.

A pilot of Workday Adaptive Planning in the U.S. has already delivered a significant breakthrough. “For the first time, we actually have aligned processes with our finance teams for budget and headcount planning and then create positions directly in Workday,” says Groth.

This alignment between HR and finance marks a major step forward in strategic, data-informed planning, setting Hilti on a firm path to build a better future—for the company and its customers.
