Serving its citizens with modern technology.

Mobile County, located in southwestern Alabama, is home to a diverse population and a rich history. The county is responsible for providing a wide range of services to its citizens including public safety, infrastructure, and social services. Like many other large state and local governments, Mobile County faced challenges with outdated technology and a reliance on manual processes. The county’s HR and payroll systems were paper-based and heavily dependent on a single outside consultant, making it difficult to access and analyze data, which led to inefficiencies and delays. Recognizing the need for change, Mobile County decided to transition to Workday.

Navigating the digital transformation.

The deployment process was not without its challenges. The county had to overcome a steep learning curve, manage a diverse group of stakeholders, and ensure buy-in from employees who were accustomed to the old way of doing things. However, with careful planning and strong leadership, Mobile County successfully deployed Workday and is now reaping the benefits.

Empowering decision-making and efficiency.

Workday has enabled Mobile County to gain real-time access to data, which has improved decision-making and streamlined processes. “We can answer questions on the fly, sometimes maybe with an hour’s worth of work. Before, that would have taken us a week to compile the information,” says County Administrator Eddie Kerr.

Optimizing payroll processes.

The transition to Workday has also improved efficiency, particularly in payroll. IT Director Anusha Sai Bauer explains, “Before, we used to have our Treasury department print paychecks and manually deliver them to each department. Now, with Workday, the process is automated, saving us time and resources.”

We are standing on our own two feet, processing our own payroll in a truly digital format.

Enhancing employee self-service.

Workday self-service capabilities have empowered employees to manage their own data, such as updating their address or benefits information, without having to rely on HR staff. This has freed up HR’s time to focus on more strategic initiatives for community service.

We now have the ability to answer questions sometimes on the fly . . . that’s work that would have taken us a week in the past.

A future-ready government.

Mobile County is committed to continuous improvement and innovation in its service delivery. As Bauer says, “We are excited to see what the future holds and how Workday can help us achieve our goals.”
