As a leader of Australia’s transition to renewable energy, AGL knows that the shift to renewables doesn’t just need new infrastructure—it also needs new skills. “Our people were used to working in coal and gas. Now we’re moving to renewable energy—a completely different business,” explains Melissa Dorey, AGL’s head of People Digital Experience.
To build adaptability into its workforce, AGL’s People and Culture team decided to shift to a skills-based approach using Workday Career Hub and Workday Manager Insights. “We chose these Workday tools, which are powered by next-generation AI and analytics, to help us get ready to flex to match whatever the future looks like,” says Dorey.
Moving the workforce to a skills-based mindset.
In AGL’s engagement surveys, people were asking for more support to pursue careers in the energy transition. In response, AGL launched the AI-powered Workday Career Hub to help people build future-ready skills for new career paths. Employees create a profile, map their capabilities, and are guided to reflect on their performance, career path, and development opportunities.
Within 3 months, 33% of employees had added skills to their profile and 35% had created a Career Hub profile. In aggregate, this data gives AGL a better understanding of what its people are capable of, helping leaders identify where to reskill, redeploy, or hire new talent.
Dorey says user feedback on the employee experience has been extremely positive. “When we tested it with our people, they loved it instantly.”
In particular, the AI-recommended learning in Career Hub has been a huge win. “Previously, people found navigating some of our learning libraries quite overwhelming,” explains Dorey. Whereas once employees have entered their skills and interests, Career Hub immediately gives them “fantastic recommendations” to help achieve their career aspirations.
Career Hub has helped us empower our employees with career development, which now sits in their hands.

Giving managers a dynamic view of career development.
At the same time, AGL rolled out the Workday Manager Insights Hub so managers can see their team’s career profile and suggestions for more helpful and guided development conversations.
Earlier in the year, People & Culture had run a design session with managers asking them to scope their dream hub for reporting. “The Workday Manager Insights Hub included pretty much all of those features,” says Dorey. “So we had a really great response.”
Workday Manager Insights Hub is game-changing for managers because they’ve got a dynamic view of the development items and the associated activities instead of having a static document.
