AI agents can now speak to each other, opening up endless opportunities for organizations. Silicon Valley veteran Jeremiah Owyang shares his thoughts on the coming trend.

Your calendar suggests the perfect time for your team to meet to discuss the next big project. AI works subtly in the background to make our lives easier. But what if that same technology wasn’t merely assisting, but actively developing business ecosystems and collaborating seamlessly?
Human-AI collaboration is already here and many businesses have stepped into the AI revolution. The rise of AI agents has transformed the way enterprises operate. Gartner predicts that agentic AI will be able to autonomously resolve 80% of common customer service issues. MicKinsey & Company reports that 92% of businesses plan to increase their investment in AI in 2025 and agentic AI is a major factor.
These autonomous agents are stepping into real-world business scenarios and fundamentally reshaping the way we work. We’re seeing a huge shift as businesses seek to leverage its potential. From customer service and data analysis to supply chain management and beyond, the endless capabilities of these autonomous systems have prompted organizations to rethink their strategies and embrace the myriad possibilities AI has to offer.
But just as we enter the era of human-machine collaboration, a new development is on the horizon—agent-to-agent communication (A2A). A recent breakthrough has opened up the opportunity for agents to interact with each other, putting us on the cusp of a new chapter.

What if AI agents could complete tasks without you? What if they could collaborate with each other, freeing you to focus on tasks that require a human touch? A2A communication is the ability of autonomous AI agents to exchange information, coordinate actions, and collaborate with each other.
Owyang sees this as the next step in enterprise AI. “Agent-to-agent is the next evolution of AI, where autonomous agents communicate, collaborate, and transact without direct human involvement. This is the next phase beyond business-to-agent (B2A), where businesses will need to engage not just with human buyers but with their AI representatives.”

Owyang predicts that A2A collaboration will go beyond just simple automation, with AI agents working together to complete transactions, hire, and negotiate. “AI agents will complete most transactions on the internet, on apps, and in the enterprise. Humans will use AI agents as their primary go to resource to retrieve information, the primary user interface, and start to rely on them to make decisions.”

Of course when considering the potential for collaborative AI agents, we must consider its challenges. Collaboration between autonomous systems introduces complex risks that, if unaddressed, can lead to major consequences. It’s important that organizations take a proactive approach focused on ethical considerations, security, and robust governance to mitigate potential drawbacks.
Owyang suggests organizations consider “agent verification to ensure only good actor agents are participating and granting access. Fail-safe reviews with humans in the loop for key review steps. And, energy efficiency to ensure agents don’t consume unneeded energy.”
Essentially, businesses will need a proactive strategy when it comes to inter-agent collaboration. That means strong security measures, clear ethical guidelines, and recognizing the continued importance of human involvement. Plan for these critical areas and A2A will deliver on its promise.
AI agents talking to each other is going to change the game. We're talking about a future where our systems are getting smarter and more efficient all the time.
As AI technology continues to progress, enterprises should anticipate increasingly sophisticated AI agents that collaborate to address the growing and ever-changing needs of organizations.
In a recent newsletter, Owyang even pushes the idea of agent-to-agent interactions one step further, “In the mid-future, we’ll see autonomous AI organizations emerge—entirely comprised of AI agents. We won’t even know if they were created by humans. These agent swarms will communicate, offer services, generate revenue, and evolve by self-improving over time. I call this an Autonomous Organization.”
So, here's the thing: we can't afford to wait and see what happens. Advancements in agentic AI are moving at lightning speed. A2A is just one of the many predictions about the future of agentic AI.
Of course, we've got to be smart about the challenges. But if we tackle them now, we'll be way ahead of the curve. This is about building a future where our businesses are more productive, more innovative, and just plain better.
