How does Workday keep humans in control of AI decisions?

Workday designs its AI to amplify human potential and keep people in control of consequential decisions. Rather than replacing judgment, Workday AI is built to support decision-making with transparency, explainability, and human oversight—particularly for outcomes that affect an individual's economic opportunity, such as hiring and promotions. AI features are designed to enhance, not replace, human decision-making, and customers configure how AI outputs are used in their processes.

How does Workday evaluate and mitigate AI risk?

Workday takes a risk-based approach to Responsible AI, assessing every AI feature against factors including whether it involves a consequential decision, whether it is directed at an individual, whether it can affect economic opportunity, and its autonomy and scope. Higher-risk features move through additional controls—human oversight, fairness evaluation, disclosure and transparency, explainability, record keeping, reliability testing, security and privacy review, and ongoing monitoring—before and after deployment.

How does Workday test its AI systems for bias and fairness?

Workday's Responsible AI team leads dedicated AI fairness testing, supported by data scientists who evaluate models for potential bias. Sensitive attributes such as gender, ethnicity, and disability status are excluded from AI scoring inputs; where legally permitted, this data may be used solely to test models for bias and is kept physically and logically separate from production scoring. This design supports fair outcomes while respecting candidate and employee privacy.

What independent verifications has Workday earned for its responsible AI program?

Workday's Responsible AI program is backed by two independent, third-party verifications: ISO/IEC 42001 certification for its Artificial Intelligence Management System, and third-party attestation of alignment with the NIST AI Risk Management Framework. ISO/IEC 42001 specifies requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and continually improving an AI management system in organizations that provide or use AI. Together, these verifications give customers external evidence of Workday's commitment to AI governance.

How does Workday support customer compliance with AI regulations like the EU AI Act?

For our product offerings, Workday complies with all effective EU AI Act provider obligations and is proactively aligning our compliance framework to future deadlines. Workday aligns its Responsible AI program with applicable EU AI Act requirements currently in effect and is an active member of the EU AI Pact, sharing its compliance journey and best practices—including an AI Literacy Program. Because Workday operates as both a developer and a deployer of AI, it publishes AI Fact Sheets that describe each feature, its inputs and outputs, limitations, testing, privacy, ethics, and bias considerations—giving customers transparent documentation to support their compliance efforts across jurisdictions like the EU AI Act, Colorado AI Act, and other emerging frameworks.
