Our sustainability efforts focus on the environmental, social, and economic issues that help create and sustain long-term success for all. To enjoy a healthy economy that fosters human potential, we need to sustain a healthy planet as a foundation for our economy. 

Our approach to environmental stewardship focuses on the impacts that are most material to our business as a cloud software company. These include our carbon footprint, investments in renewable energy, reducing and responsibly disposing of our e-waste, and engaging with our employees to maximize their collective impact on how we operate.

Net-zero carbon emissions by 2021.

Workday is committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2021. Our carbon management strategy is to avoid carbon-intensive activities where possible, focus on reducing the carbon intensity of our operations through efficiency measures, replace high-carbon energy sources with low-carbon energy sources, and offset the remaining emissions. Workday believes in transparently reporting our efforts to stakeholders. We have published our carbon footprint dating back to our 2010 baseline in our Global Impact Report and will continue to do so as we track our progress toward our 2021 goal.

We’re happy to say that at the end of FY17, we achieved net-zero carbon emissions across our offices and data centers globally.

The cloud is green.

Our multi-tenant cloud architecture helps customers reduce business costs and carbon footprints by centralizing server processing, optimizing energy usage, and eliminating redundant equipment. Our data centers are optimized for processing, energy, and cooling efficiency. In addition, all the data centers that run our cloud applications—in both the U.S. and Europe—use 100 percent renewable electricity.

No landfill policy.

Workday ensures the secure disposal of all electronics. We maximize the reuse of equipment when possible and dispose all remaining items responsibly by adhering to the strict e-Stewards standard.

100 percent renewable energy.

Workday supports the development of clean energy projects by committing to use 100 percent renewable electricity in our office buildings and data centers. We also offset 100 percent of our emissions from using natural gas in our office buildings.

Our commitment to clean energy has been recognized by the EPA in the Green Power Partnership program with a 100% Green Power Purchaser status. We have joined RE100, a group of influential global businesses committed to 100 percent renewable electricity. Workday is a signatory of the Corporate Renewable Energy Buyers' Principles and a member of the Business Renewables Center, both of which aim to help companies meet their renewable energy goals and accelerate corporate renewable energy procurement. We’re also a member of Future of Internet Power, a collaborative initiative to increase the use of renewable energy to power data centers.
