About Formula 1
The origins of Formula 1 (F1) racing can be traced back to the European Grand Prix championships of the 1920s and 1930s. However, the modern Formula One as we know it began taking shape in 1946, with the standardization of rules by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), followed by the inception of the first World Championship of Drivers in 1950.
Today, F1 continues to attract a massive global following, with millions of fans tuning in to watch the races live via broadcast or in-person. In addition to a rapidly growing fanbase, the sport is also a major platform for automotive technology and innovation, with manufacturers using F1 as a testing ground for new technologies and materials.
With the Grand Prix du Canada having been in search of a permanent home for a number of years in the 1960s and 1970s, the Circuit Ile Notre-Dame first hosted the race in 1978. Fittingly, Gilles-Villeneuve, a legendary Canadian Formula 1 driver, claimed his maiden win at the track that would end up bearing his name.
Since then, Montreal has embraced Formula 1 teams and welcomed fans like no other city in the world. With an array of activities around the city, there is no shortage of fun to be had over the race weekend.
The Grand Prix du Canada takes place at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve.
