Business Process Framework

Workday's Business Process Framework provides configuration, execution and monitoring of all the business processes and related real-world events managed in Workday. Configuration is code-free, allowing business users to continually define and alter the business processes specific to their organization without spending the resources typically involved with workflow configuration and maintenance.

Configurable business process automation

Traditional enterprise applications typically focused on the automation of transaction processing and the associated reporting around these transactions. The linking of these transactions to end-to-end business processes and the automation of the related reviews and approvals wasn't contemplated in the core architecture of these systems. It was added as an afterthought. The result: expensive, inflexible, code-heavy add-ons and customizations.

Workday's business services include not only definitions for business transactions ("events") but also the workflows and processes these transactions link together("business process definitions"). These business process definitions can be configured and adjusted on the fly without coding or Workday's involvement. This ensures that the reality of the business is supported in Workday at a fraction of the cost and headache of traditional applications.

Business process configuration simplified

Workday's Business Process Framework is a complete set of services for configuring, executing and monitoring both the out-of-the-box business processes that Workday provides and the processes the business has configured to meet its specific needs:

  • Use pre-defined business processes. Workday delivers almost 100 pre-defined business process definitions, accelerating the implementation process and providing a starting point for any additional configuration.
  • Re-configure processes whenever needed. Add or remove steps within a predefined process without writing any code. Any process can be applied to the entire enterprise or to specific organizations within an enterprise, allowing each part of the enterprise to automate each business process based on how they operate.
  • Maintain rules, roles and policy documents. Conditional rules and routing, a list of valid actions and roles that can be used in each process, configurable approvals, and the ability to attach documents describing corporate policy will help ensure compliance and proper routing of each step of a business process.
  • Notifications in the right place at the right time. Users who fill the roles involved in a business process will see related information on their Workday homepages (e.g. Inbox, My Workday, and All About Me pages). Users can set up notifications to receive email messages alerting them to either actions they should take or work that has happened.
  • Report on process status. The Business Process Framework knows the status of all work in process, and process details for all work completed. The result is reports that provide visibility across the organization into what processes are still awaiting action and those that are complete.
